Grid Computing News : Univa UD Launches Open Source Grid Community

Univa UD has re-launched its Grid.org Web site as an online community for open source grid and cluster users and developers. The site was where United Devices had housed its public grid computing projects before its merger with Univa. Now the site will get a second life as an open source grid and cluster community. Univa UD isn't the only company making grid computing announcements at this week's Supercomputing conference. The Open Grid Forum announced that its High Performance Computing Basic Profile specification will be adopted in product releases by several commercial providers, including Microsoft, Altair, and Platform Computing.... read more

Gartner and Forrester: Use of Web services skyrocketing

Two of the leading analyst firms that track IT trends -- Gartner Group and Forrester -- are predicting a massive uptick in the use of Web services, which greatly simplify the process of machine-to-machine communication between otherwise incompatible applications.... read more

Another milestone for Utility Computing?

In recent weeks, we have seen a second wave of vendors making major utility computing statements: Big names like Computer Associates, Unisys, Veritas and EMC have all announced their own variant of it. So is the landscape clearer now. Or is it just more crowded. Is the message to potential users unified or consolidated.... read more

A New Wave of Utility Computing Acquisitions

The ever increasing complexity of the enterprise data center is challenging IT managers to come up with creative ways to manage the data center and do so while keeping the costs down. Simultaneously, many executives worry that current inflexibility of the IT infrastructure actually hamstrings corporate business strategy. Product development, product launches, channel development and other activities get delayed or even abandoned due to the difficulty and cost of modifying today's information technology infrastructure.... read more

Will the Real Utility Computing Model Please Stand Up

To the potential user of utility computing, one thing is clear: the vendors of utility computing are as confused as the users are. A bewildering array of terms currently jostles for position. On demand computing, adaptive computing and agility computing are just some. More important still, there is a danger that the true business benefit of utility computing will be obscured beneath the mere technical. In this, the first in a series of articles by Leif Eriksen, searches out the business definition of utility computing.... read more

Review: Autonomic Computing Report by Grid Technology Partners

According to Gartner VP, Bob Hayward, the global research firm sees utility computing as one of the key strategies for 2004. Layered Technologies, NetApp Pair Storage, Grids

Network Appliance and Layered Technologies unveiled offerings this week aimed at making storage play nicely in grid computing environments. Utility hosting service provider Layered Technologies took the wraps off DynaVol, a grid-based scalable and flexible data management solution, and NetApp collaborated with Oracle on Direct NFS Client, which boosts Oracle Database 11g performance in IP-based environments. Layered CEO Michael Platner said DynaVol secures data off-site in the company's data centers, making it available and scalable on demand. All data is mirrored to a different server at a different location as a backup, with near real-time automated backup recovery. The DynaVol package is housed in a virtual private server (VPS) environment, enabling access to supported protocols and services using either built-in VPN server support or public IP-based access systems.... read more

SDSC Does Supercomputing on Demand

The San Diego Supercomputer Center is making one of its powerful parallel clusters available to researchers around the country, with a little help from Interactive Supercomputing Inc. With ISC's Star-P interactive supercomputing platform, SDSC is making the cluster easier to use and available on demand to scientists, engineers, students and others across the country. Star-P bypasses the notoriously complex programming requirements of parallel systems to let researchers transparently work with the cluster using familiar desktop tools. Users can code models and algorithms on their desktop computers using popular applications such as MATLAB, Python and R, but run them instantly and interactively from a distance over the internet on SDSC's cluster. Researchers at the University of Maryland, for example, are using the system to do 4-D MRI medical image processing to improve radiation therapies.... read more

Univa UD Outlines Grid and Cluster Strategy

At last week's Open Grid Forum in Seattle, Univa UD CTO Steve Tuecke outlined the grid and cluster product roadmap of the company formed by last month's merger of Univa and United Devices. The product suite will include a free, downloadable open source standard for cluster workload management, along with a professional version that gives Cluster Express added functionality. For enterprise-wide grid computing, Univa UD will offer Grid MP, a United Devices-developed product that the company calls "the industry-leading technology for powering heterogeneous grids of all sizes and types."
"Switching to Univa UD products can put an end to the hefty maintenance price tags and unreliable support that our customers say are so typical of proprietary solutions," Tuecke said at OGF21. "Users of our cluster products can free themselves from schemes based on proprietary software and literally can be up and running on our proven, cost-effective Univa UD technology in a single day."
The new product lineup includes:
Cluster Express, a free download that integrates top open source cluster components into a complete cluster management product, with available support. Grid MP, with "proven scalability, security, application on-boarding and usability [that] make it the acknowledged leader in both PC grids and enterprise grid computing." Over time, Grid MP will be increasingly integrated with the company's open source offerings.... read more

Platform Makes HPC Management Play

Platform Computing has acquired Scali's HPC cluster management and monitoring business. Platform said the acquisition of Scali Manage is the next step in realizing the company's vision of an integrated HPC infrastructure software solution. Cluster and grid computing use is on the rise, but integrating and managing such systems remains complex, Platform said. Platform Open Cluster Stack and Scali Manage are two products that have been designed to meet this challenge and improve performance and management and lower support costs for operating an HPC infrastructure. Platform said it will integrate components of Platform OCS and Scali Manage "into a best-of-breed product offering."
As part of the deal, Platform said it will retain all key sales, development and support personnel and will continue to sell, support and enhance Scali Manage.... read more

IBM Grid Speeds Cancer Research

Thanks to the IBM-sponsored World Community Grid , researchers will be able to complete decades of cancer research in a year or two. A research team composed of scientists from the Ontario Cancer Institute (OCI), Princess Margaret Hospital and University Health Network is the first from Canada to use the World Community Grid, a volunteer network of PCs and laptops that boasts as much power as any of the world's top five supercomputers. The team will use the grid to analyze the results of experiments on proteins using data collected by scientists at the Hauptman-Woodward Medical Research Institute in Buffalo, N.Y. The analysis would take conventional computer systems 162 years to complete, according to IBM, but the grid will give researchers the power to complete the analysis in one or two years. The result will be a better understanding of how proteins function, which could lead to the development of more effective cancer-fighting drugs.... read more
